Dental emergencies happen when you least expect them, which is why it’s so important to have a plan in place if one occurs. In addition to contacting Troy Bartels, DDS as soon as an emergency takes place, there are some steps you can follow to mitigate the damage.

Most Common Types of Dental Emergencies

Below, we’ll go over three of the most common types of dental emergencies to make sure that you feel confident and well-informed if one of these dental issues ever arises.

  • Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth

If one of your adult teeth is knocked out of the socket, pick it up by the top (crown portion) to protect the roots from additional damage. Carefully rinse off the tooth. If possible, reinsert the tooth into the socket. Next, gently bite down on a piece of clean gauze to hold the tooth in place. If you can’t put it back, then place your tooth in a cup or bag of milk and bring it with you to your emergency appointment. The faster you get in to see us, the more likely we’ll be able to save your natural tooth.

  • Broken Tooth

If you break a tooth, make sure to collect the pieces right away. Rinse any dirt or debris from the injured area and apply a cold compress to minimize any swelling. Then, get to the office as quickly as possible. Don’t forget to bring any pieces of your tooth with you.

  • Severe Toothache

If you find yourself battling a severe toothache, start by gently flossing around the tooth to dislodge any trapped food particles or debris. This debris may be the cause of your toothache. If you are still experiencing tooth pain after this step, we recommend using an over-the-counter pain medication and a cold compress to help minimize the discomfort. Call our office for an emergency appointment if the pain persists.
