5 Tips for Recovering From Dental Surgery

While dental surgery is never fun, it sometimes is the quickest and most effective way to treat an issue. And after surgery, it’s critical to take care of yourself. Our team at Troy Bartels, DDS has put together the following list of steps you can take to recover from dental surgery.

  1. Follow Directions
  2. After your procedure, the most important thing you can do to ease your recovery is to follow the detailed post-operative instructions given to you. This way, you are less likely to experience painful side effects and complications that can turn the experience into a nightmare. For example, if you’ve had your wisdom teeth removed, we will tell you to avoid straws while your mouth heals. If you do not follow this instruction and use a straw, the suction could dislodge the clot forming where your tooth was extracted, resulting in a painful condition called a dry socket.

  3. Rest
  4. This one is usually easy to follow since you probably will not feel like doing much after dental surgery. Rest to give your body a chance to heal itself. Taking it easy reduces the risk of you accidentally irritating the site of your surgery.

  5. Ice
  6. Gently applying ice is a great way to reduce swelling and ease pain around the site of your surgery. Depending on your procedure, we may give you more specific instructions about how long and how frequently to apply ice.

  7. Keep Your Mouth Clean
  8. Maintain good oral hygiene during your recovery, as any surgical incisions or extraction sites are especially susceptible to infection. We’ll give you specific dos and don’ts suited to your surgery, but in general, do not vigorously rinse or swish to protect your healing mouth.

  9. Trust Yourself & Keep Us Informed
